A Note on Sources

We obtained the data on the percentage of undergraduate A's for Fall 2000, Spring 2001, Fall 2001, Spring 2002 from the Office of Institutional Research at the University of Alabama. We took a four-semester average both of the percentages for the university and college levels and for 100 to 200 level courses in Arts and Sciences. The data for undergraduate A's in Fall 1972, Spring 1973, Fall 1973, and Spring 1974 (from which we took an average) came from Office of Institutional Analysis, University of Alabama, Student Grade Distribution, 1972-73 through 1975-76 (September 1976). A copy is in the Hoole Collection at the University of Alabama. The university-wide average ACT scores are in American Universities and Colleges (1973 edition) and The College Blue Book, Tabular Data (2002 edition). The breakdowns of average ACT scores of entering freshmen by individual colleges at the University of Alabama are in the most recent edition of Academic Profiles which was published by the Office of Institutional Research in August 2000. Finally, it should be mentioned that during each full semester from Fall 1972 to Spring 1974, the overall percentage of undergraduate grades in New College which were P (or Pass) ranged from a low of 39 percent to a high of 65 percent.
