Next week we begin a new section, devoted to tracking the “journalism” of The Tuscaloosa News‘ main reporter for the University of Alabama.
Gilbert Cruz will be familiar to the readers of that publication as the author of several stunningly important articles on the making and marketing of the Bear Bryant bobble-head doll last year.
Under the direction of fluff-and-puff editor Douglas Ray, Cruz recently expanded his journalistic endeavors to include regular reporting on boob-cam. Boob-cam is the non-event the Tuscaloosa News whipped up into a major issue when a cop used a city camera to zoom in on the breasts and buttocks of women walking down University Avenue at 3 in the morning.
Unfortunately, the skill so amply displayed in the bobble-head and boob-cam stories has not been evident in the News‘ reporting of financial mismanagement in the construction of Shelby Hall, the case of Christopher Hinton, the mass termination of dozens of UA employees, or the strange contract hiring of Hoar Construction.
For that, you must turn to The Alabama Observer or The Crimson White.
But hey, when there are bobble-heads to report on, we know where to turn!
Check back next week, as we begin our new section dedicated to watching and wondering at the consumate investigative skills of the notable Tuscaloosa News reporter, Gilbert Cruz.
